East India Youth - Heaven, How Long

EIY’s sweeping stand out track marks the first release from The Quietus’s new Label Imprint. William Doyle Speaks to NP about his transition to electronic music and rising from bedroom producer to one of London’s more exciting new artists.

After playing in a band for a long time, has the move into electronic music given you a less restricted approach to creative expression?

Definitely less restricted. I think it was more about me personally uncovering things about the creative process that I had forgotten. Things that I used to rely on when I made music by myself before the band. Electronic music is really conducive to the particular way I want to express myself. I learnt a lot with playing in a guitar band and writing pop songs, and that’s something I will take with me forever. But ultimately I think I’ve found my place in electronic music as a general term.

When I first heard your record things were in pretty early stages but in a short space of time its developed fast . After an exciting few months where do things go now for EIY?

I think I just want to improve the live show at the moment and really make it gel. I’m still working it out but I think each gig is a progression on the last. I’m recording music all the time so really I’d like to meet the right label to release some of it. But it’s important not to rush into anything at this stage. The reaction and response to my work so far has been really encouraging and certainly it’s all happened quite organically. I haven’t had to jump through too many hoops to get where I am at the moment so for that I’m thankful.

Wild Smiles - Tangled Hair

The South Coast’s Wild Smiles drop their debut single through Geoff Barrow’s Invada Records. Tangled Hair glows with fuzzy raw nostalgia but no nonsense pop melodies give the track the fun and excitement sometimes missing amongst recent british guitar bands. Regardless of the pissing rain your hearing a record drenched in summer.

Really excited for this! Opening track from Efterklang’s forthcoming album ‘Piramida’ out on Sept 24th. The video, directed by Jakob Steen & Christoffer Frandsen, features images from the bands trip to the remote abandoned mining settlement of ‘Piramida’ where the band recorded sounds & drew inspiration for the album.
